Bu çerçevede imparatorluğu kurtarmak için Osmanlılık ve Türkçülük akımlarının gelişimini, İttihat ve Terakki'nin iktidar sürecini, I. Dünya Savaşı'ndaki gelişmeleri ve savaş bitiminde memleketin işgaline giden aşamaları irdeliyor. İzmir'in işgali ve sonrasında Mustafa Kemal'in Anadolu'ya geçişi ile başlayan süreç Türk Kurtuluş Savaşı'nın odağını oluşturmaktadır. Bu çerçevede İnalcık, milli iradenin hakim olması için Erzurum ve Sivas kongreleri ile başlayan mücadelenin 23 Nisan 1920'de Ankara'da Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi'nin açılışı ile ivme kazandığını ve sonrasında Doğu, Güneydoğu ve Batı Anadolu'da Mustafa Kemal liderliğindeki Türk ordusunun elde ettiği başarılar ile saltanatın kaldırılması ile neticelendiğini ortaya koyuyor. İnönü Muharebeleri, Sakarya Muharebesi ve Büyük Taarruz'dan başarılı bir netice elde eden Ankara Hükümeti'nin 24 Temmuz 1923'te imzalanan Lozan Antlaşması ile siyasi olarak mevcudiyetini dünya kamuoyuna tescil ettirdiğini gösteriyor.
